Music and Performing Arts

Extra Curricular Activities

Music is an integral part of the curriculum here at WPS, which is broken up into five strands:

  • Performing (Singing)
  • Performing (Instrumental)
  • Composing
  • Describing
  • Transcribing

The fundamentals of music begin with our youngest children in the Foundation Stage, where children have music and dance lead lessons. They learn to express themselves musically through their movements, learn to explore the different sounds of instruments, tap out simple repeated rhythms and begin to build a repertoire of songs and dances.

As the children move into Key Stage 1, they start to develop their awareness of pitch and rhythm through various songs and activities, using their voices and classroom instruments. Each class receives a weekly music lesson and the children can look forward to their opportunity for a whole year group performance for parents, which is meant to be a showcase of what they have learnt in class.

In Key Stage 2, your children build on these skills and also learn basic skills on Ukulele, Guitar and Keyboard. Every year group has the opportunity to take part in a showcase performance as performing is a key skill within the Music curriculum. In Year 3 & 4 children participate in year group based music celebrations and as your children move into Year 5 & 6 they continue to develop their musical talents in class based music assemblies and various other concerts and events.

The highlight of the WPS musical calendar is the children in Year 5 and 6 partaking in the flagship school production, which this year is Shrek the Musical Junior, and in the past has included Alice the Musical, Ali Baba and Seussical Junior. Here children combine their singing skills with their skills in drama and dance, bringing all three together in harmony to create a wonderful spectacle for the audience.

ArtsED International

WPS have formed a partnership with ArtsED, to give children a real flavour of what it’s like in the Performing Arts industry. The ArtsED team have worked with the children on their production of Shrek the Musical Junior, taking them through dance routines and choreography that would be similar to those found in professional theatre. They have developed children’s drama skills such as musicality, characterisation, expression and movement. We are very proud that all of children in Years 5 and 6 have been able to access this quality tuition and benefit from their professional experience.

ECAs

The children also have access to various Extra-Curricular Activites (ECAs) across Music and other Performing Arts. These include Training Choir, Senior Choir, Orchestra, Ukulele Ensemble, Dance Academy which are run by WPS staff, and also includes Street Dance with UDO (United Dance Organisation).

Each group performs in the departmental concerts at the end of Term 1 and Term 3, as well as at our International Fair. Our Senior Choir have competed at ChoirFest Middle East for numerous years, and are often involved in many other events in and around the local community. Our Dance Academy also compete in events that are scheduled throughout the year.

Instrumental Lessons

Instrumental Lessons are provided by GEMS Music Hub (GMH). Children take an individual 30-minute lesson once a week on a rotating timetable. Paired lessons are also available for a reduced cost. Lessons are available on Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Ukulele, Drums, Violin, Flute, Trumpet, Voice. For more information please visit the GMH website.

Children who make good progress with their instrumental learning, including those that learn outside of school, have lots of opportunities to perform for their peers, the WPS community and across Dubai. These include assemblies, concerts as well as internal and external events.
