Physical Education

Enhance physical, mental and social development

The Physical Education curriculum at WPS focuses on a number of diverse activities and sports including gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding and invasion games that are designed to promote and enhance physical, mental and social development.

The WPS sports squads all enter the DAPSA league. Each season we enter teams to participate in external competitions across the region. We compete in the following sports; Football, Netball, Swimming, Touch Rugby, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics, Cross Country, Basketball and Golf.

Swimming is a valued part of our curriculum at WPS. Living in Dubai we highly regard swimming to be an imperative life skill and ensure all our pupils become confident swimmers. During lessons, pupils are initially taught how to be safe in and around the water. Pupils work in small ability groups to develop their confidence and ultimately practice and develop the four main strokes. The lessons are designed to be fun and enjoyable, and at the same time differentiated to meet the needs of each individual swimmer to ensure that each child is being challenged. Competitive swimming is highly regarded at WPS. The most able swimmers have the opportunity to represent the school as part of our Swim Squads.

Students at WPS have the opportunity to gain internationally recognised awards and qualifications through Sports Leaders UK. As a partner in the UAE, WPS facilitates Sports Leader training for Year 6 pupils through the Leadership Academy Programme. This equips young people with employability skills for life by improving motivation, self-esteem, communication, team work, and confidence. Leadership volunteering is a vital part of all of the Sports Leader courses, allowing young people to practice and build their skills to help them in employment and education.

Football

Football at WPS is one of our most sought after clubs. Our boys and girls squad teams between Year 3-6 compete in the DAPSA leagues on a weekly basis and have been very successful in past seasons; with teams reaching Quarter Finals and Final on numerous occasions. As a department we recognise the need for player development and as such we have introduced a Football development squad for those looking for extra Football practice to enhance their skills.

Basketball

Basketball at WPS happens in the Summer term of the academic calendar, in line with the DAPSA competitions schedule. Students from Year 3-6 train on a weekly basis in order to compete against schools across the UAE in various competitions. During the sessions the students work on the fundamental skills needed to be successful in matches whilst introducing and considering different tactics for a variety of situations.

Golf

WPS enter our very own Golf Team into the DAPSA Golf League. We play in the 4 rounds of the DAPSA Tour competing for both individual and team prizes. Students are encouraged to practice out of school time with the teachers getting regular updates from parents and students. One of our Golfers has won numerous prizes in the MENA region.

Cross Country

Every year WPS enter a team into the DAPSA Cross Country Races from Year 3-6. Students compete in their lessons to be selected for the squad that enters the competition. This event brings all DAPSA schools together for an afternoon of competition over a 1.2 and 1.6km course respectively. This competition is always very competitive and we look forward to the event every year.

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby is a recent addition to our WPS curriculum. Our mixed squad teams from Year 3-6 compete in the DAPSA leagues on a weekly basis and have been very successful. All matches have been on a friendly introductory basis which prepares us for a more competitive season next year. The Boys and Girls teams have enjoyed learning a new sport and competing against other schools in a similar position.

Netball

Netball is a very popular choice of sport within girls PE.  With competitive teams from Year 3-6, the squads meet weekly to practice their game play for the competitive matches against other schools in Dubai.  As past winners of the U11 Netball DAPSA League, WPS have made excellent sporting achievements in this sport and continue to train for a successful future.

Swimming

A huge emphasis is placed on Swimming at Wellington Primary School, with both the Development and Swim Squads meeting for their weekly swim sessions before and after school. Our pupils are constantly given the opportunity to work hard and improve their ability for the competitive meets around Dubai.

Gymnastics

A new, exciting squad at WPS is Gymnastics. Our mixed squad team, involved children from across the school. They meet on a weekly basis to practice and perfect their gym routines to compete in leveled competitions against other schools around Dubai.

Rounders

Another popular mixed squad at WPS is Rounders, children in Years 3-6 are invited to participate.  The team meets on a weekly basis to practice their fundamental ball skills and specific striking and fielding skills to prepare them for the competitive matches, within the DAPSA League, against other schools across the UAE.
